PixelFinder

PixelFinder is a multi-purposes high definition video processor for a regular user and professional alike. It is capable of taking in video from more than one sources and delivering video images to an attached display device in more than one format and resolutions after quality improvement of images in terms of noise reduction, color enhancement, motion de-interlace, sharpness, and image stabilization. And it automatically configures the output to best match the display device attached whenever possible. It also measures the input signal and reads the resolution information of the display device attached, where display device is standard compliant. Additionally, it’s capability to do forced resolution output can be used for checking out the monitors’ quality. These powerful features allow a consumer to know exactly what they are getting at and take the guess game out of the setting up equipment for high definition video. It is the easiest way by far and the most affordable mean to bring high definition to a family; it allows a computer monitor to function as a HDTV monitor, a home theater projector to be a HD projector, and a LCD TV into a HDTV. And it saves business a great deal of money in the following areas hotel room TV upgrade, game room video equipment upgrade, presentation equipment upgrade, etc.

PixelFinder provides the following functions to a user:

-Connect a video source device to an originally-incompatible video display device

-Improve video quality for a video source device and a compatible video display device

-Scale up or down video image to be shown on a display device

PixelFinder offers the followings:

-For input, PixelFinder has both the most popular video source interfaces namely VGA connector and the HD video interface YPbPr. It takes video from a computer, a game box, a high definition DVD player, or even a regular DVD player with YCbCr, etc. It allows a computer monitor, modern or classic, to function as a HD TV monitor; and you don’t have to buy a HDTV to play a video game of 1080i or 720p image resolution. Both input ports can be connected to video sources at the same time with selection set in a user menu.

- For output, PixelFinder has both classical and modern computer monitor interfaces namely Digital Vision Interface (DVI) and VGA that supports VESA standard and non-VESA standard. DVI transmits the video image digitally that can be displayed on a computer monitor with a better result than VGA. Note that PixelFinder does not claim to be HDMI compliant but with comparable video signals between DVI and HDMI, a user can acquire a re-wired adapter between DVI and HDMI in the market to use PixelFinder on the DVI port for video output to HDMI port of LCD TV, HDTV, or PDP type of display devices; however this usage is limited to 60HZ sets.

-PixelFinder performs the most important functions namely resolution scaling and format conversion automatically – plug and play, provided that display device is standard compliant and has a VGA or DVI/HDMI port.

-PixelFinder offers user control interface consisting of a user menu for advanced operations and 6 hard keys that can be acted on directly for easy operation.

-PixelFinder has a user interface to allow video source switching, color adjustment, screen resolution adjustment, aspect control for 4:3 or 16:9, zoom to fill the screen, contrast adjustment, brightness adjustment, sharpness adjustment query for the screen resolutions, and power on/off.

-PixelFinder performs 3D de-interlace on the interlaced input in D1 or D3.

-PixelFinder supports input HD video resolution of D1 to D5 from a YPbPr or YCbCr connector set. It also supports analogue RGB input from a VGA port of a computer. VGA input supports many resolutions including popular 800x600, 1024x768, and 1280x1024 in this version of the PixelFinder. Detailed list of input resolutions supported can be found in attachment at the end of this user manual.

-The DVI output is for any monitor equipped with single channel DVI connector. If the monitor has only VGA port, the VGA output is provided via a DVI/VGA adapter which is a part of the package. The resolutions supported by DVI are 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x720, 1280x768, 1280x1024, 1366x768, 1400x900, 1600x1200, 1680x1050, 1920x1080, and 1920x1200. All the output resolutions are 60 HZ. VGA supports all the resolutions that are supported by DVI but quality of images for VGA are certified to 1280x1024. The DVI output is a single pixel channel. Dual channel is available in a future version of PixelFinder. 1280x720 and 1920x1080 are D4 and D5 respectively and they can be set to send image via HDMI adapter to a HDTV that supports 60HZ, in other words, progressively.

-PixelFinder automatically scales the input video to the output video in the resolutions that is best for the attached monitor. For a computer monitor, the highest resolution supported by a monitor is the best image resolution on the monitor and it is done automatically or with output resolution set to EDID manually – more detailed descriptions on this later.

-PixelFinder allows manual search for the best solution for multiple port display device such as a LCDTV, PDP, or HDTV. Manual effort may be required due to the fact that these TV sets do not follow standard by and large or lack of standards for VGA port or DVI port on these types of sets. It may require a user to use a still color image to test out all the ports namely VGA, DVI, or HDMI.  How to conduct the search for the best resolution is detailed in the resolution adjustment 1.5.1. This search is good for using a display device of types mentioned as a HDTV for a high grade computer monitor.

-PixelFinder can be used for a computer, a game box of HD or not, a HD DVD player, or other HD media players. It can output to a computer monitor, a projector with VGA port or DVI port, a LCD TV or HDTV equipped with either a VGA port or a DVI port.

-PixelFinder raises the HD grades support of a HDTV. Currently most of the HDTVs do not support some of the higher grade HD resolutions. PixelFinder can take D1 to D5, the full spectrum of HD grades, and scale it to fit a HDTV panel resolution when the HDTV is equipped with a DVI port, HDMI, or VGA port. Note that when HDMI port is used the resolution should be limited to D4 or D5 for this purpose.

-PixelFinder can measure input video grade to be D1 to D5 in real time when component input is used. VGA input is measured in real time in terms of pixel such as 1280x1024. For both inputs, the frequencies for H-sync and V-sync are also measured. Out of supporting range in VGA input is measured as well however the accuracy may not be accurate all the time.

-PixelFinder can be set to sent out image of a designated resolution among the supported resolutions; it can be used to test the quality of a display device. With a re-wired DVI/HDMI adaptor that can be found in your local store, PixelFinder can send out test pattern image on D5 to test if a HDTV is really a 1080p.

-PixelFinder offers VGA to DVI conversion, YPbPr to VGA conversion, YPbPr to DVI conversion, and VGA to VGA scaling. It actually merges the TV video and the computer video together. A PixelFinder, when deals with VGA input and VGA output, acts as an active scaling engine. PixelFinder can remove difficulties of using some monitors to work with some specific computer video cards in a computer or some specific computer mother board where VGA is integrated on a mother board. It allows an HDTV to be used as a high grade computer monitor despite the fact that the HDTV may only support low grade VESA resolution such as 1024x768 via its VGA port.

-PixelFinder offers zooming capability to deal with wide screen video on 16:9 by removing or minimizing the annoying envelop black top and bottom with tolerable distortion on the image. In some not so rare cases, only after zooming, the images shown become normal only after zooming.

-PixelFinder offers controls over viewing area size and aspect ratio to deal with video source either that is of 4:3 or 16:9. It is a perfect device to handle the video source that wraps a wide screen image in a 4:3 screen format. A DVD image is a typical example that wide screen images are wrapped in a 4:3 image signal. The scaling of the PixelFinder will use the 16:9 images whenever possible to perform scaling so that image displayed has larger viewable areas and less image distortion.

-PixelFinder’s user control interface allows forced resolution output to test out the quality of the display devices and to find the best display quality among VGA, DVI, HDMI interfaces.

-Self-generated test pattern allows a user to test handling variations in resolutions by a display device.
